ROUTINE PAIRINGS · Evidence checked 22 October 2026

Low pH is a clue. It is not a mildness score.

pH helps distinguish an alkaline soap from many syndets. It cannot reveal the surfactant system, friction, water temperature, rinse quality or personal tolerance.

30-second answer. An alkaline soap can create a larger, slower-to-recover surface-pH rise than an acidic cleanser. That is a reason to look beyond soap if it leaves you tight—not proof that every pH-5.5 product is gentle.

What controlled studies measured

Record Finding Boundary
Korting 1991 Two 8-week comparisons of pH 5.5 with pH 7.0/8.5 changed surface pH. Ten healthy volunteers per sequence; no detected roughness or TEWL difference. Surface pH is not a barrier score.
Lambers 2008 pH-9 soap produced a larger five-minute hand-surface pH rise and slower recovery than pH-5.5 cleanser. Hand pH movement does not rank facial irritation, acne, eczema or microbiome outcomes.
Hawkins 2021 Low-pH prototypes led by anionic surfactants could be drier/more irritating than neutral comparators in forearm testing. Formula principle, not proof that acidic cleansers are usually harsh.
Moldovan 2010 After the same one-minute hand wash, soap/syndet products differed in pH movement and drying. Single-use healthy-hand evidence does not make a facial 60- or 90-second rule.

Read the label without turning it into a lab report

“Low pH” near 5–6 makes a conventional alkaline-soap state less likely. Syndet, isethionate, sulfosuccinate, betaine, glucoside or SLES name some surfactant components. They do not disclose concentration, free-monomer activity, micelle structure, impurities, fragrance sensitivity, rinse behaviour or individual tolerance.

A bounded routine

  1. Change one variable: if tightness recurs, swap cleanser or reduce rubbing before adding several “barrier” products.
  2. Do not invent a universal contact time. Use enough contact to spread and rinse as directed, without deliberate scrubbing.
  3. Stop for persistent burning, rash, swelling or eye symptoms. Diagnosed eczema, rosacea, active dermatitis, recent procedures or prescription topicals need the clinician’s plan.
