Routine Pairing / Pigment Control
Tranexamic acid + niacinamideHow to layer them
They can share a routine, but trials of a combined moisturizer do not prove the same result from two separate serums. See order, concentration and an 8–12 week review point alongside daily sunscreen.
Before buying a high-strength serum, compare the 2SOL 10% niacinamide formula report and niacinamide concentration guide. Neither substitutes for evidence on your exact tranexamic-acid formula.

The 30-second answer
This pair is reasonable for uneven facial pigmentation, especially when you want a non-exfoliating routine. A randomised double-blind trial in 42 Korean women tested a moisturiser with 2% niacinamide + 2% tranexamic acid twice daily for eight weeks, with assigned sunscreen each morning. It outperformed vehicle plus sunscreen (p<.05).
That is real combination evidence, but the abstract does not provide a consumer-friendly effect size, the sample was small, and “facial pigmentation” is not one diagnosis. Melasma, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, freckles and changing lesions require different decisions.
Start with one combined product once daily, moisturise, and use generous broad-spectrum sunscreen every morning. Assess at 8–12 weeks rather than adding more actives after ten days.
Who may benefit—and who should be cautious?
Post-blemish brown marks, uneven tone, or melasma-prone skin already committed to daily sunscreen.
Choose 2–5% niacinamide rather than assuming 10–20% works better. Start every other night if eczema or flushing is common.
New, changing, asymmetric or bleeding pigment; persistent melasma; pigmentation after medication or pregnancy; any uncertainty about diagnosis.
Topical use is not the same as oral TXA. Pregnancy data for cosmetic topical TXA are limited; ask your clinician. Never self-start oral TXA.
What the evidence actually tested
| Evidence layer | Design and result | Boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Pair tested together | Lee et al., 2014: 42 Korean women aged 30–60; 2% niacinamide + 2% TXA (n=21) vs vehicle (n=21); twice daily for 8 weeks; assigned morning sunscreen. Instrumental and photographic assessments favoured the pair (p<.05). | Small study; no clear magnitude in the abstract; industry R&D affiliation; one finished formula, not any two serums layered together. |
| Modern combination comparison | 2025 randomised study: 99 enrolled (33 per arm), with 77 included in the month-three efficacy analysis. Niosomal 2% TXA + 2% niacinamide reduced melanin index 18.60% and mMASI 64.04%; conventional 5% TXA + 4% niacinamide reduced 14.62% and 61.07%; 4% hydroquinone reduced 14.78% and 61.04%. All groups used SPF ≥30. | No statistically significant efficacy difference between groups. Adverse reactions were 1/33 (3.03%), 1/33 (3.03%) and 6/33 (18.18%; p=.033), using all 99 randomised participants as the denominator. The efficacy percentages reported here are the month-three Table 1 values; the paper’s narrative gives different follow-up percentages. This compares finished formulas; it still does not prove ingredient synergy. |
| Niacinamide alone | Hakozaki et al., 2002: paired 5% niacinamide study in 18 people and a 120-person study using 2% niacinamide + sunscreen. Pigmentation decreased versus vehicle by week 4. | Does not establish that more than 5% is better; Procter & Gamble-affiliated research. |
| Topical TXA broadly | 2023 meta-analysis: 45 efficacy studies (2,359 patients). Topical TXA showed pooled MASI/mMASI improvement, SMD −1.5 (95% CI −2.0 to −1.1); reported irritation proportion 0.8% across included TXA studies. | Mainly melasma, with varied formulations, concentrations, comparators and co-interventions. A pooled effect does not predict one cosmetic serum or PIH. |
| Current synthesis | 2024 review of 22 RCTs (1,280 patients) found improvement across TXA routes. | High heterogeneity; oral, injection and topical evidence must not be blended into one cosmetic claim. |
Important: the strongest result for this article is the 2% + 2% trial. It supports that specific finished formula and schedule. It does not prove “synergy,” and it does not validate every product advertising both names.
A conservative AM / PM routine
Morning · prevent re-darkening
- Gentle cleanse or rinse.
- One TXA + niacinamide product, if used comfortably twice daily.
- Moisturiser as needed.
- Broad-spectrum SPF 50+ / PA++++ in an adequate amount; reapply with exposure. For melasma, consider tinted sunscreen with iron oxides for visible-light protection.
Evening · treat without stacking
- Gentle cleanse; let reactive skin settle.
- TXA + niacinamide product once nightly for the first 2 weeks.
- Plain moisturiser.
- Only after tolerance is clear, decide whether a retinoid or acid belongs on separate nights.
Amount: follow the product label; for a serum, a thin even layer is enough. More product does not force pigment to fade faster. Evaluation window: photograph under the same light at baseline, week 4, week 8 and week 12.
Can you use both on the same night?
Yes—especially in a single finished formula. Neither ingredient chemically requires a special waiting period. If you own separate products, apply the thinner product first, but do not confuse order with efficacy.
- Beginner or reactive skin: alternate nights for 1–2 weeks, then combine if comfortable.
- Already using retinoids or exfoliating acids: do not introduce everything together. Keep the pigment pair on non-active nights first.
- High-niacinamide formulas: flushing, itch or bumps can occur in some users. A lower concentration may be more usable long term.
Public-experience audit
We reviewed eight public Reddit discussion threads dated 2021–2026 across r/AsianBeauty and r/Melasmaskincare. This was a small purposive sample, not a survey. Thread-level categories overlap and are not incidence rates.
| Audit item | What we observed | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Visible fading mentioned | Several threads contained at least one report of improvement over roughly 2–6 months. | Most users also used sunscreen, vitamin C, azelaic acid, retinoids, procedures or another pigment treatment; attribution is weak. |
| Irritation / intolerance | Some threads included eczema flare, irritation or inability to tolerate part of the routine. | One case involved a prescription multi-active cream and another implicated a vitamin C product. This does not identify TXA or niacinamide as the sole cause. |
| Confounding | Most threads clearly involved multiple active ingredients or procedures. | Useful for routine design, poor for proving efficacy. We coded these as “commercial relationship unknown” unless disclosed. |
Included threads: topical TXA/niacinamide, TXA journey, routine layering, PIH treatments, product review, hyperpigmentation products, pigment serums, and topical TXA discussion. We excluded bot text, oral-TXA-only claims and comments without usable routine context.
Stop signs and special situations
- Stop and simplify for persistent burning, swelling, hives, worsening eczema or rapidly deepening pigment after irritation.
- Melasma often relapses and is affected by UV, visible light, heat and hormones. A serum without photoprotection is an incomplete plan.
- Oral TXA is a prescription systemic antifibrinolytic with clotting-related contraindications. Evidence for oral TXA must never be used to sell a topical cosmetic.
- Topical TXA is generally better tolerated than aggressive exfoliation, but “gentle” does not mean risk-free for every formula.
Ledger verdict
A rational pair with one direct controlled trial—not a shortcut and not universal synergy. For melasma or irregular facial pigmentation similar to the studied populations, 2% TXA + 2% niacinamide in one well-tolerated formula is a defensible starting point. Use for brown post-blemish marks is an extrapolation, not direct proof. High percentages and crowded routines are not automatically better.
The non-negotiable partner is sunscreen. If nothing changes after 12 weeks of consistent use and photoprotection, revisit the diagnosis and routine rather than continuously adding actives.

2021~2026년 Reddit의 r/AsianBeauty와 r/Melasmaskincare 공개 토론 8개를 확인했습니다.
